A man going into music should be told, if he aspires to be a concert artist, composer or conductor, that his true profession, in terms of his livelihood, will probably be in some field secondary to his main interest or ability. Society will engage him as a teacher, arranger, administrator, critic, scholar, orchestral player, editor, entertainer, tune-mechanic in movies or television, disk-jockey or mellifluator on the radio. The equipment for, and the inducement toward, professional music study in America is entirely out of proportion to the nation’s outlet in concertizing and professional leadership. This, at least, he should be given to know.

In view of this circumstance, the serious musician may well consider following the example of some of the nation’s poets and composers, such as Charles Ives, John Alden Carpenter, Wallace Stevens, William Carlos Williams; and exercise his chosen profession extra-professionally. Although this course will leave him less time for his music, it will spare him from encountering too much music under indifferent or exhausting conditions. It may be better to struggle to stay in music than to struggle to get away from too much of it. It is a question between mistress and marriage.
